More Than Just Luck Podcast Featuring Vista Maria Survivors

What a Summer It Has Been!

What was once only a dream has become a reality.

When this movement began just a few short months ago, we had no subscribers or followers. All Greg and his team had was grit, determination, and a vision: to bring attention to stories many people are uncomfortable discussing—but stories that must be told. These conversations can help protect our families and communities while showing how courageous people have overcome tremendous obstacles and beaten the odds.

Greg launched this movement by sharing the stories of survivors who spent time at Vista Maria, a residential facility in Dearborn Heights, Michigan.

    Vista Maria Facility

In their interviews, survivors discuss deeply troubling allegations involving physical and sexual abuse, drug overdoses, and deaths connected to the facility. These are their stories, told in their own words.

What happens when someone decides to stop protecting powerful people and start telling the truth?

In my conversation with Brad Lea on Dropping Bombs, I reveal the stories that most people would never dare put in print—from building companies worth tens of millions to the legal battles, investigations, and behind-the-scenes secrets that shaped More Than Just Luck.

Some stories cost money to tell. Others make enemies. I told them anyway. Watch the full conversation and decide for yourself.

More Than Just Luck: Giving to Voice Unmuted

    Hello fellow supporters,

At More Than Just Luck, we have always believed that change doesn’t happen by sitting on the sidelines. Real impact requires showing up, standing with the vulnerable, and lending our platform to those who have been forced into silence. Recently, our team stepped into a heartbreaking but absolutely vital mission.

Standing with the Survivors of Vista Maria: You may have seen the devastating investigative reports carried by WDIV (Local 4) regarding Vista Maria – an all-girls facility where former residents have courageously come forward with accounts of unbearable living conditions, physical abuse, and severe sexual abuse.

These women were placed in an environment meant to protect them, only to endure what many have described as a living HELL.

    We couldn’t look away.

The More Than Just Luck staff had the deep honor of hosting The Voice Unmuted, a powerful monthly gathering dedicated to providing these survivors with a safe space to heal, connect, and reclaim their narratives. The energy in the room was indescribable, and the local community is rightfully demanding accountability.

Our efforts caught the attention of major news outlets dedicated to making sure these stories are heard. We want to extend a massive thank you to WDIV, CBS News, and WWJ Radio for coming out to report on the event and helping us amplify the voices of these incredible women.

In Michigan, navigating the timeline to seek justice for childhood trauma involves distinct rules depending on whether a survivor is filing a civil lawsuit for financial damages or seeking criminal charges against an abuser. For civil claims, Michigan law provides a general 10-year statute of limitations from the date of the abuse to file a lawsuit; however, because the victim was a minor, this 10-year clock is paused (or “tolled”) and does not officially begin ticking until the individual reaches their 18th birthday. This gives survivors until age 28 to file a civil suit against their abuser or the institutions that enabled them. We do not believe there should be a statute of limitations on these disgusting acts and since most states have changed their laws, we are asking the Michigan legislation to do the same.

Help change the statute of limitations law in Michigan!

    Keeping it Real:

Greg on the Nothing Fancy Podcast.

Speaking of keeping it real, our very own Greg recently sat down as a guest on the Nothing Fancy podcast. If you know Greg, you know he doesn’t sugarcoat anything.

During the episode, he peeled back the curtain on what it’s really like navigating the media and podcasting landscape. Greg went on a bunch of different podcasts, but they were all filmed on dirty couches in people’s basements – and he actually paid some hosts to be on them.

That experience reminded us why we built our own space.

    Step Into Our Studio:

We’re Looking for Our Next Guests!

We didn’t invest in a state-of-the-art podcast studio just to hear ourselves talk. We built this space to serve a much greater purpose: to provide a high-quality, professional, and completely authentic launchpad for people with powerful stories, unique perspectives, and unfiltered truths.

When you sit behind our mics, you aren’t just getting a platform – you’re getting an environment built for raw, honest conversations.

Why Our Studio Standard is Different:

Let’s be real: the podcast world is crowded right now. After navigating the industry, sitting down on the Nothing Fancy podcast, we saw firsthand how many people are just looking for a quick cash grab, a viral soundbite, or a superficial ego boost.

    • No Clout-Chasing: We don’t care about superficial metrics or transactional relationships. If you’re just looking for a stage to pitch a get-rich-quick scheme or stir up empty drama, we aren’t the show for you.

    • Just Real Talk: We value substance over hype. We want the innovators, the survivors, the disruptors, and the everyday heroes who have walked through the fire and have the wisdom to prove it.

    • Top-Tier Production: We’ve built a professional, broadcast-ready environment so that when your story is told, it sounds crisp, looks sharp, and commands the respect it deserves.

In the next several weeks we will be having applications available here and all our social media platforms where there you will tell us why you think you belong on our show. If we think we can help you with your product, service or anything else, we will call you and remember there will never be a cost of any kind to appear on our show.

Thank you for being part of this journey with us. Every share, every listen, and every monthly gathering brings us one step closer to ensuring no one’s voice stays muted. Let’s make some noise. If you aren’t signed up on our social media platforms, Greg asks that you click on the following links and become a subscriber today.

  • More Than Just Luck: Review by Karim Ahmad

More Than Just Luck: Review by Karim Ahmad

I just added More Than Just Luck into an entrepreneur memoir and business discussion group on Goodreads because I truly admire how you approached the question of what happens when a kid who grew up in violence, poverty, and chaos with an alcoholic father, who stole baby food to feed his children, builds a multi-state security company with nearly 1,500 employees and then watches it almost all collapse from betrayal and partnership splits.

Your book did not just inform me. It changed how I think about the difference between “motivational success stories” and the raw, unfiltered truth about what it really takes to survive. One thing stopped me, and I suspect few people notice it. You stole baby food. Not as a teenager acting out, but as a grown man trying to feed your children.

That is not a career highlight. That is a confession about a man who reached a point of desperation so complete that he broke the law to keep his kids from going hungry. You could have hidden that. You could have polished your origin story into something more palatable. You left it in. Because you know that the hunger—literal, physical hunger—was the engine that drove you. But the deeper, more courageous confession is what happened after you built the empire. You grew a security company from a few hundred employees to nearly 1,500 across ten states . You generated over $40 million in annual revenue . You had partnership splits that cost millions. You faced lawsuits, federal scrutiny from the FTC and IRS, and internal betrayal that nearly ended everything . You even survived attempted hits on your life . The man who once stole baby food to survive watched his business empire nearly crumble from the inside out. And he wrote a book about it—not as a victory lap, but as a warning.

You wrote this book for the entrepreneur who is in the trenches right now. Someone who started with nothing, who grew up in chaos, who has made morally gray decisions in the name of survival. Someone who has been betrayed by partners, scrutinized by regulators, and knocked down more times than they can count. Someone who is exhausted by the relentless grind of building something that could disappear tomorrow. Someone who is starting to believe that maybe the people who say “success is just luck” are right. Because there is a person reading this who grew up in poverty, who had an alcoholic parent, who stole food because they were hungry, who fought their way out of the trailer park and into the corner office. They have been betrayed. They have been knocked down. They are tired. They are starting to believe that the system is rigged against people who started where they started.

They do not know that a man from Willis, Michigan, who built a multi-state empire and survived betrayal, wrote a book called More Than Just Luck. Your book might be the first time they see a serial entrepreneur who built and lost and rebuilt, who says…

“Success isn’t luck. It’s discipline under pressure. Audit your habits. Tighten your circle. Make decisions based on long-term power, not short-term emotion. Most people don’t fail because they can’t win. They fail because they quit when it gets uncomfortable”.

Not as a motivational cliché. As a man who has quit, failed, stolen baby food, nearly died, and kept going anyway.

  • Overcoming and Reclaiming: The Healing Dinner

Overcoming and Reclaiming: The Healing Dinner

The recent gathering of these survivors was a testament to the fact that while the abuse shaped a chapter of their lives, it does not define their entire story.

The dinner served as a physical space of validation. Women who attended different eras of the program sat side-by-side, sharing a meal not as victims of a broken system, but as architects of their own healing.

Overcoming this level of institutional betrayal doesn’t happen overnight, but the survivors are actively reclaiming their lives through distinct paths:

    1. Turning Pain into Advocacy

Many of the women are using their experiences to ensure no other child suffers a similar fate. They are fighting to ensure the residential program remains closed permanently and pushing for stricter oversight in youth foster care and juvenile justice facilities across Michigan.

    2. Rewriting the Narrative

For decades, the facility controlled the narrative, labeling the girls as “troubled” or “unruly” to dismiss their complaints. By speaking to the media and filing formal legal complaints, the survivors have completely flipped the script. They have exposed the systemic failures of the institution while reclaiming their personal dignity.

    3. Finding Strength in Community

The bond between the Vista Maria survivors is a fierce, protective sisterhood. Healing from deep trauma requires a community that truly understands the specific nuances of what you went through. At the dinner, laughs were shared, tears were validated, and a collective promise was made to look out for one another moving forward.

    Looking Forward:

The road ahead is long, and a lawsuit is just one step on a lifelong journey of recovery. But the shadows of Vista Maria no longer hold the same power over these women. By stepping into the light together, they have proven that their spirits could not be broken.

To every survivor of Vista Maria—whether you have spoken out publicly, joined the lawsuit, or are still processing your story in quiet safety: Your voice has value, your pain is recognized, and your survival is a victory.

Excerpt from Author Anthony Avina’s review of ‘More Than Just Luck’ by Greg Wier:

“A refreshingly honest, compelling memoir, the author does an incredible job of writing in a way that feels both conversational and inspiring. The author’s writing style holds no punches, speaking directly to the reader and revealing the gritty side of both his life and life in the world of personal security. The shocking stories the author relates to readers, from both a personal and professional angle, are astonishing, to say the least, and prove that some of the most compelling stories come from the most unlikely of places.”

Header image of Jaishree Nenwani's review of 'More Thank Just Luck' by Greg Wier

Excerpt from Jaishree Nenwani’s review of ‘More Than Just Luck’ by Greg Wier:

Some books entertain you. Some motivate you.

And then there are books that hit you hard.

More Than Just Luck is that kind of book.

From the very first page, Greg Wier makes it clear that this is not a polished, polite business memoir. This is a raw, no-holds-barred life story of a man who grew up in violence, poverty, and chaos — and clawed his way to financial success through grit, hustle, risk, and sometimes morally gray decisions.

As I read it, I felt like I wasn’t just reading a memoir — I was sitting across from someone telling me the uncensored truth about what it really takes to survive and win.
